Well Russ,
May be I am using the wrong SCSI host adapter. I have an Always IN2000.
Operating in NT on 486SX 40MHz with 16MB RAM. I can't say I am impressed
with the performance. I feel that my system runs a lot faster under
DOS/Windows for Workgroup 3.1 with 32bit disk access DISABLED. It is not
a dog, but I am definitely not impressed with the performance.
* But then, under NT, I can confidently perform SCSI tape backup while
I continue to do my word processing etc. Can't do that under DOS/Windows.
Naturally I am a little disappointed with my SCSI setup under NT. May be
16 MB is not quite enough RAM? May be the PIO design of Always IN2000
does not work well with NT? May be Always' SCSI driver for NT is not
well written? ... May be I should change to an Adaptec 1542C?
I wish my SCSI would perform better. But, as it stand, if I can do it
all over again, I would just buy IDE. My understanding is that IDE
might be technically inferior to SCSI, but given the programming effort
going into supporting it as the de facto standard on the PC, I am not
surprised that IDE consistently turn in better performance than my SCSI.
Sigh.
